What Is Optomap?

Optomap is an ultra-widefield retinal imaging system developed by Optos. Unlike traditional fundus cameras that capture only 15–30° of the retina, Optomap captures a full 200° panoramic view — equivalent to 82% of your entire retina — in a single, non-invasive image.

The peripheral retina — the area traditional cameras miss — is where many serious conditions begin. Retinal tears, early diabetic changes, and certain tumors often appear at the edges first. Optomap sees all of it.

At ProVision Eye Associates, we offer Optomap as part of every comprehensive eye exam for just $39. We store your images year over year, creating a longitudinal record that helps us detect subtle changes before they affect your vision.

Did you know? Traditional retinal exams miss up to 85% of the retina. Many serious conditions — including retinal detachments — begin in the periphery.

What Optomap Can Detect

Many of the most serious eye conditions develop silently — no pain, no blurry vision — until significant damage has occurred. Optomap catches them early, when treatment is most effective.

🩸

Diabetic Retinopathy

Damage to retinal blood vessels from diabetes — often asymptomatic until advanced.

🔍

Macular Degeneration

The leading cause of vision loss in adults over 50. Early detection is critical.

👁️

Glaucoma

Optic nerve damage from elevated pressure. Peripheral vision loss happens silently.

Retinal Tears & Detachments

Sudden flashes or floaters can signal a tear. Early treatment prevents detachment.

❤️

Hypertensive Retinopathy

Changes in retinal vessels from high blood pressure — visible before symptoms.

🔬

Choroidal Melanoma

Rare but serious eye tumor detectable only through thorough retinal examination.

Why Optomap Is Better

Six reasons patients and doctors prefer Optomap over traditional retinal exams.

82% of the Retina in One Image

Traditional cameras capture only 15–30° of your retina. Optomap captures 200° — that's 82% of the retina — in a single, half-second image. More retina seen means more disease detected.

No Dilation Required in Most Cases

Dilation drops blur your vision for hours and make driving difficult. Optomap eliminates the need for dilation in most patients, so you can go right back to your day.

Half-Second Capture

The entire image is captured in less than half a second. It's fast, comfortable, and requires no contact with your eye — just look into the device.

A Permanent Record for Your Eyes

We store your Optomap images year over year. Comparing images from visit to visit lets us detect subtle changes — like the earliest signs of macular degeneration — that would be invisible in a single exam.

Detects More Than Eye Disease

The retina is the only place in the body where blood vessels can be viewed directly and non-invasively. Optomap can reveal signs of diabetes, hypertension, and even certain cancers.

Recommended for All Ages

Children, adults, and seniors all benefit. Kids with a family history of retinal disease, adults with diabetes or hypertension, and anyone who wants the most thorough exam possible.

Who Should Get Optomap?

We recommend it for everyone — but it's especially important if you have any of the following:

Diabetes or pre-diabetes
High blood pressure
Family history of glaucoma
Family history of macular degeneration
Age 40 or older
Flashes or floaters in your vision
High myopia (nearsightedness)
Previous retinal disease or surgery
African American heritage (higher glaucoma risk)
Anyone who wants the most thorough exam possible
